Gender and Health Insurance

There has been a lot of talk lately about Obama's Affordable Care Act. Many religious affiliates and pro-life groups are not happy with the act because it requires employers to cover birth control for women. We have been talking about birth control in our class and whether or not it should be controlled by doctors. Many people suggested that it should be doctor controlled because of health risks and monitoring, but it was also brought up that many women who would want birth control might not be able to afford it. Now, with Obama's new plan, they will be able to afford it and it will improve access to quality healthcare for more women.

  1. Conceptually, I can understand where religious affiliates and pro-life groups may find contention against the idea of birth control. However, the biggest issue I take with the opposition towards birth control and,in effect, this "war on women" that legislators seem to be holding is the blatant disregard for the other half of the sexual equation as well as a demonizing of the act of sex.

Birth control is not a tell-tale sign of a woman's sexual promiscuity. There are health benefits for women that can be beneficial in various respects as it provides a woman a means to healthily regulate her body. There is such outrage and opposition from private groups and sects of the freedom a woman has over her own body. I think that the opportunity to give women, in the 21st century, the freedom to do as she will with her body should be provided. At the very least, give women the chance to opt in to what they can and should do with their body
